How to Use Dynamic Wallpaper on Mac

Dynamic wallpapers change their appearance over time. To try one, open System Settings → Wallpaper, choose a picture under Dynamic Wallpapers, then use the menu beside its name to select Dynamic if available. Download it first if a download icon appears.

Dynamic, Automatic, and still: what changes?

Apple describes Dynamic as gradually changing with the time of day. Automatic follows the Mac’s appearance settings, while Light (Still) and Dark (Still) hold one version. Choices depend on the selected wallpaper and macOS version. A normal JPEG or PNG is a single image; setting it as wallpaper does not turn it into a time-changing wallpaper.

If a dynamic wallpaper stays still

  1. Return to Wallpaper settings and check that the selected picture offers and uses Dynamic, rather than a still option.
  2. Allow any requested wallpaper download to finish.
  3. Check System Settings → Date & Time and your time zone. Apple notes that dynamic desktop pictures use the time zone if location services are off.
  4. Give the picture time to change: the transition is gradual, not a constant animation.

Does Dark Mode control the wallpaper?

Appearance and wallpaper choices are related but separate. Some wallpapers offer an Automatic option linked to the Mac’s appearance; Dynamic and still options behave differently. Check the available menu for your chosen image. Aerial screen savers are another feature and may animate when the Mac locks or unlocks.
