JPEG, PNG or HEIC for Mac Wallpaper?
For a photographic wallpaper, a high-quality JPEG is often a practical choice. PNG can preserve sharp graphic edges without lossy compression, while HEIC can be useful when your original photo is already in that format. The source image and export quality matter more than the extension alone.
Which format should I choose?
- JPEG: often compact for photographs; heavy compression can introduce blockiness or bands in gradients.
- PNG: lossless and useful for illustrations, text, and flat colors; photographic files can be larger.
- HEIC: a format used for many Apple photos. Keep an original copy if you export to another format.
Compare the actual image at full size on your screen. Converting a blurry or heavily compressed image to PNG will not restore missing detail.
Export a copy in Preview
- Open the original image in Preview and choose File → Export.
- Choose a format such as JPEG, PNG, or HEIC from the Format menu. If exporting JPEG, select a suitable quality setting.
- Give the exported file a different name or location, then save it.
- Open the exported copy to inspect it, then set it as wallpaper.
Apple lists the export choices in its Preview format guide. Keep the original so you can make another export if needed.
Does file size tell me whether a wallpaper is sharp?
No. File size is affected by format, image content, and compression. Check the image’s pixel dimensions and visual quality as well. Our resolution guide explains how to compare an image with your screen.
